What is Fatberg?

A fatberg is a huge mass of non-biodegradable waste that clogs sewage systems. Fatbergs start to form when materials like "flushable" wipes, sanitary items, grease, oil, and other non-biodegradable are flushed down the drains. These materials collect in the sewage system and gradually grow big enough to block a sewage system. If not prevented, fatbergs can cause serious blockages and spilling of raw sewage in homes and businesses. In 2017, a massive fatberg in Baltimore, Maryland caused the overflowing of sewer pipes. If you don't take preventive measures to prevent fatbergs in your plumbing system, you could end up spending a lot of money on repairing your sewer system, not to mention compromising your health.

How Can You Prevent Fatbergs

Do Not Flush Wet Wipes Down The Toilet

Flushable toilet wipes, baby wipes, and cleaning wipes should not be flushed down the toilet. Although some of these wipes may be labeled as flushable, it's advisable to avoid flushing them altogether. Instead, put them in the appropriate trash bin. Some of them are made with plastic materials, which means they could take many years to biodegrade.

Do Not Pour Oil, Fat, Or Grease Down The Sink

Oil, fat, and grease may seem like they can glide down the sink with ease, but these liquids solidify quickly in the drain to form large obstructions. These liquids can cause nasty blockages and trigger costly plumbing repairs. Instead of pouring oil, fat, or grease down the plughole, put the liquid in an empty container and allow it to solidify, then dispose of the solid into the trash bin.

Use Sink Strainers

A sink strainer is a perforated metal sieve used to filter out solid material in a water system. These simple items help to filter larger debris that can clog your plumbing pipes.

Don't Use Your Toilet As A Bin

Some of the things that form fatbergs when they collect in the sewer system include condoms, sanitary towels, tampons, cotton pads, and wipes. Avoid flushing these items down the toilet, and you won't have to deal with fatbergs.

Have A Plumber Check Your Slow Drains

Slow drains are an indication that there could be materials accumulating inside your pipes. If you don't address the problem in a timely manner, the materials could end up forming a fatberg. It's a good idea to hire a qualified plumber in Youngstown to attend to slow drains before they become blocked.
