How to Unclog a Garbage Disposal

A clogged garbage disposal can be frustrating, messy, and inconvenient. You’re more likely to encounter this problem if you’re fond of putting fibrous foods like celery down the drain. While a clogged garbage disposal unit can be nasty, it is often easy to fix using simple tools you probably already have.

If you're not a DIY enthusiast, your first instinct when dealing with a clogged garbage disposal might be to call a plumber. While seeking professional help might be one phone call away, it may not always be the most cost-effective option. Unclogging a garbage disposal is pretty easy and straightforward and requires nothing more than basic plumbing tools such as a hex wrench and a plunger.

In this guide, Mr. Rooter Plumbing guides you through the process of unclogging a garbage disposal unit. In case you need professional help from a plumbing service, reach out to Mr. Rooter Plumbing.

Here Are Six Ways To Unclog A Garbage Disposal

Method 1: Manually Remove the Blockages

The first thing to do when you encounter a clogged garbage disposal is to perform a manual checkup. Turn off the power and carefully reach into the disposal with a pair of long-handled tongs or pliers to try to remove any visible objects that might be causing the blockage. Once you’ve removed the blockages, turn the appliance back on and test it to see if it drains water properly.

Method 2: Reset the Appliance

Sometimes, all you need to do to restore your garbage disposal unit to proper working order is to reset it. Locate the breaker that controls the disposal and turn it off. Allow the disposal to rest for a few minutes and then turn the breaker back on. Try using the disposal again.

Method 3: Rotate the Blades with a Hex Wrench

If you have a standard garbage disposal, it should have a hex wrench access hole located on the bottom or side of the disposal. You can use a hex wrench to turn the blades and break up any stuck debris. Follow these steps:

  • Unscrew the splash guard to access the disposal.
  • Find the hex wrench that fits the socket on the disposal's motor shaft.
  • Carefully insert the hex wrench into the socket.
  • Turn the wrench clockwise or counterclockwise to rotate the blades. You may need to apply some force to dislodge any stuck debris.
  • After rotating the blades, turn the breaker back on and test the disposal to see if the blockage has been cleared.

Method 4: Use a Plunger to Dislodge the Clog

If the garbage disposal is still not draining, grab the plunger and follow these steps:

  • Fill the sink with a few inches of water. This will create a seal between the plunger and the drain.
  • Place the plunger over the drain opening and create a tight seal.
  • Plunge up and down vigorously for several minutes. This will create pressure and help dislodge the clog.
  • After plunging, turn on the cold water and test the disposal to see if the blockage has been cleared.

Method 5: Remove and Clean the P-Trap

If the clog persists and other methods, like plunging or using a hex wrench, haven’t worked, try to clean the P-trap. To clear a P-trap clog, carefully disconnect the P-trap from the drainpipe. Remove any debris or buildup from the fitting and reattach it to the drainpipe.

Method 6: Call a Top-Rated Plumbing Repair Service

If you're unable to unclog the disposal yourself, it's best to call a professional plumber in East Liverpool. Professionals have seen it all when it comes to garbage disposal issues and have the skills to restore your unit to good working order.
